On the 14th June he carried out his first operation, being
the pilot of a Lancaster bomber engaged on operations over Le Havre,
France. The following day he carried out his second operation,
this being bombing raid on Balenciennes, also in France. The
aircraft failed to return to base, all the crew including Flight
Sergeant Betley being classified as missing. Later information
was received that the aircraft had crashed and that the crew were
buried in Rieux, France.

Other New Zealanders who were killed with F/Sgt. Betley
when the aircraft crashed were:- W/O E.W. TOOPEY of Hokitika.
F/SGT. P.J. COOK of Stratford.
F/SGT. L. E. HALE of Hamilton.
