Dene Fox was born at Christchurch on the 5th (redacted October) February 1921. He received his secondary education at the Sacred Heart College, Auckland, passing the University Entrance examination, also gaining a University Entrance Scholarship and the Higher Leaving Certificate. He afterwards attended Otago University and Auckland University College for two years taking science subjects and he was still studying at the time of applying for enlistment in aircrew, on the 19th August, 1940. He played rugby for both Sacred Heart College and Otago University, also taking part in Athletics, swimming, rowing, boxing, tennis and golf.

Pilot Officer Fox was enlisted in aircrew on the 2nd March 1941 at the Initial Training Wing, Levin and proceeded to No. 2 Elementary Flying Training School, New Plymouth on the 12th April for his elementary flying training. He embarked for Canada on the 18th June 1941 to complete his training under the Empire Air Training Scheme.

Pilot Officer Fox arrived in Canada early in July and was posted to No. 10 Service Flying Training School, Dauphin, Manitoba on the 6th of the same month. Here on the 25th September 1941 he was awarded the flying badge and commissioned in the rank of Pilot Officer, afterwards proceeding on the 3rd October to No. 1 "Y" Depot, Halifax, Nova Scotia for embarkation to the United Kingdom.

Pilot Officer Fox arrived at No. 3 Personnel Reception Centre, Bournemouth on the 24th October, and was posted to No. 53 Operational Training Unit, Llandlow, Wales on the 18th November, where he completed his training as pilot of Miles Master and Spitfire fighter aircraft, before posting on the 1st March 1942 to No. 485 (Royal New Zealand Air Force) Squadron, located at Kewley, Surrey. With this Squadron as pilot of a Spitfire he took part in five operational flights being two channel sweeps, an airsea rescue search, one convoy patrol and one bomber escort.
