William Green was born at Auckland on the 27th April, 1923
and received his secondary education at the Mounnt Albert Grammar
School. He furthered his education by night classes at the Seddon
Memorial Technical College. He was a member of his school's First
XV while at Primary School and was also interested in swimming.
He was also a member of the Territorials and served with the 1st
Battalion of the Auckland Regiment. His civilian occupation was
that of a clerk and was so employed by the New Zealand Railways
when, on the 18th March, 1941 he applied for aircrew training in
the R.N.Z.A.F.

Pilot Officer Green was enlisted at the Initial Training Wing,
Rotorua on the 7th March, 1942 and on the satisfactory conclusion
of the course he proceeded to No. 1 Elementary Flying Training
School, Taieri for his elementary flying training. On the completion
of this course he embarked on the 2nd October, 1942 for Canada to
continue his training under the Empire Air Training Scheme.

Pilot Officer Green arrived at No. 3 "M" Depot, Edmonton,
Alberta. On the 19th October and on the 7th November proceeded
to No. 3 Service Flying Training School, Calgary, Alberta. At
this station on the 5th March, 1943 he was awarded the Flying
Badge and promoted {to Sergeant.} to{ He was further promoted} Flight Sergeant on the 5th September, 1943,
and he was commissioned in the rank of Pilot Officer on the 7th
April, 1944. Meanwhile, on the 15th March, 1943 he had proceeded
to No. 1 "Y" Depot, Halifax, Nova Scotia to await embarkation
to the United Kingdom.

Pilot Officer Green arrived at No. 11 Personnel Despatch
and Reception Centre, Bournemouth on the 4thApril, 1943 and was
posted on the 22nd May, 1943 to No. 29 Elementary Flying Training
School, Clyffe Pypard, Wiltshire and on the 8th of the following
month he proceeded to No. 15 (Pilots) Advanced Flying Unit,
