SUMMER HILL
SELECT SCHOOL.
ESTABLISHED IN 1877
LOCATION.
This school is located in the village of Canton, Smith county,
six miles north of Troup, and about midway between Tyler and
Henderson.
HISTORY.
For several years previous to the building of the International
and Great Northern Rail Road, Canton was a village of some note,
but afterwards it was nearly absorbed by Overton and Troup.
In the years 1867-'68, the Principal of the school here, was
Rev. I. Alexander; 1868-'69, J. R. Thomas; 1870. McDonough
and Hickey; 1871-'72 , R. A. Powell; 1873-' 74- '75-'76, W. H.
andB. F. Word; 1877, Orr with Fitzgerald; 1878 with Matthews;
I 879, with Green ; I 880 with Ford.
The name of the Post-office was changed from Troup to Old
Canton, and then to its present name, Omen.
HEALTH.
Being situated on a considerable elevation, and having plenty
of good, pure water, it is of necessity as healthy as any place in
Easter Texas
MORALITY.
No drinking saloons, gaming tables, nor any other such machines
of conuption have been tolerated here for the last four years.
CHURCHES.
There are three organized Churches here-Methodist, Baptist
and Presbyterian . Sabbath Schools-Union and Methodist.
SOCIETY.
The society of this place is composed principally of plain, honest,
unassuming people, who are here for educational purposes, and
this fact alone is sufficient assurance of its social worth.
HOMES.
Good comfortable homes within one or two miles of the school
building, are offered, either for rent or sale, by the following
parties : R. W. Hamil ton, Drs. N. W. and A. W. Foster, R.
F. White, Henry Floore, I. W. Orr, Dr. Sam. Overton, W. D.
· Pace, E. Jarvis, Daniel Gillis, E. H. Toncray, Mrs. N. A. Pace,
· J. A. Ayers, J. D. Spruce, J. 0. Collier, l\'Irs. Lindsey, J. M.
Duncan and C. L. Wilson.
When parties prefer building to renting, lots can be secured at
$10,oo_or $15,00, and lumber can be had at Capt. Flinn's Mill,
three miles east, for 75 cents per 100 feet.
There can be no risk in this as the school is a permanent one,
and property here is gradually advancing.
EXPENSES.
Good board can be procured at from $7,00 to 9.00 per month.
The average expense of board, tuition, books, etc., for the whole
year, need not be above $98 oo, and may be much less by adopt-

REGULATIONS.
Thus far our school has been fortunate in securing that class
only of pupils who were willing to do their duty, promoting harmony,
and working in earnest : and we want no other kind in
future
6
As we do not propose retaining pupils addicted to drinking,
swearing, laziness, clan - ne correspondence, or anything else
not consistent with the deportment of high-toned, christian ladies
and gentlemen, there exist no necessity for a "set of rules "
other than to do right.
We deem it the prerogative of teachers to train their pupils in
every respect-intellectually, morally and socially-and we shall
assume this privilege.
MEMBERSHIP.
All over the country there are boys and girls, who, owing to the
sparseness of settlements, have grown up without having the advantages
of even an elementary education, and occasionally there is
one who has the vim to work himself up to the true sphere of manhood
; to all such we extend a most cordial welcome, and would
urge them to come on no matter how little they now know.
Neither fancy dress, nor any kind of uniform is required here.
Our object is to make the necessary expenses as light as possible, 1 1
so that any aspiring boy or girl, who really wants an education,
can get it.
Pupils in this school generally have sense enough to appreciate
an honest heart, or good mind, whether it is accompanied by
gaudy dress or not.
"Wisdom is the oniy thing that relieves us from the sway of
passion, teaching us to bear the injuries of fortune, and showing
the paths which lead to tranquility and peace." Cicero.
