night a little, planted corn in garden Snaps
Beets etc about 1st Apl
Mouse & Pink had their calves about 12th
Lilas Leg sealed about 8 Inst., —
planted water melon seed in Sweet
Potatoe Patch - 16 Fine Rain yesterday

16 Packing Tobacco, etc etc

17 Turned off cool & we commenced on
yesterday 16 to plant corn in fresh ground
& finished that pt this evening, -

18 Fair & cool 19. Cloudy & cool
planting corn below barn in big field

19 Laying off corn ground & collering &
Halling in new ground

20 Same work 21st began to Plant corn
at 12 Oclock Finished breaking corn
ground 20th - 22nd Planting corn in
big field - Johns, - Tobacco plants small

April 5, 1847 was Easter Monday. Don't know what "Republican" refers to.

I'm guessing that "Republican" is short for Republican Grove, VA, which is just southeast of Aspen Grove. There are a couple of churches there now, and while it's not as close to the Renan area as Straightstone, it's probably only 15 miles away.
