1872 Oct 6th I am going to Sunday School the Lord permitting & may break up the Sunday School to day 7th Lowry Graves set in here to work this morning Wm Bailess Hyram Wyat & Lowry Hanging Tobacco in Lot cloudy & like for rain. Mr Mattherly Halling Logs for me to day to Mill Carried one this morning - 10 feet Long for [10] Inch plank Wrote to [Edelons] of the Herald this morning & sent it to Post office [by] Mr Mattherly, Rained & Mr M did not Carry but one Log & went home after the rain we got most all of our Tobacco in House yesterday 8th Firing Tobacco in old & new prize Barn this morning cleared off this morning pretty morning Raised & Housed all my Lot Tobacco & Sams & put it in Back of Garden & Sam Halled wood to fire it. Lowry Ben Andrew & Lewis worked on road out to plant Bed & Lowry went home this night making 2 days he has worked of the month Went home to get up his corn & Coming back next Monday. Mr Mattherly halled 2 Logs to Millers to day for me making 7 to Miller's he carried & I have 2 at Yates, -- 9th Halling 1 Log to Yates saw Mill this morning for 10 Inch Plank Gathering apples til 12 oclock In the Evening Mr Mattherly carried 2 Logs Mr Wright got us Sheep this evening --- [to] Millers Mill for 4 Inch [Joint Breakets] for Kitchen, Sam firing barn Tobacco back of Garden Balance [Beekin] trough of apples for Cider Jacob got 5 Bushels of his toll wheat & Carried it to Millers Mill 10th Halling up corn this morning Mr Mattherly gone to Millers with 1 Log [1 Log] for Rafters Sam firing (the second "1 Log" on this line is deleted) Tobacco Ben & Lewis & Andrew Halling up Corn Clear day Clear windy day finished firing Tobacco Mr Mattherly gone to Millers with another Log & all I [shall] carry now making 11 Logs I have got at Millers & 3 at [L_] W Yates for Plank

1872 Oct 11th Mr Mattherly Halling Logs to day for himself 1 this morning & 1 [shucking] corn this morning mine in first part of my fresh ground old part, clear & cool 12 Mr Mattherly Halling Logs for himself to Millers Our folks getting up corn Halling wood &C [Jerrys] wife & children Here 13th Went to Meeting Mott went home quite cool 14 Nannie & me went to at Strait Stone 4 professed in the course of the day & I went at night 5 or 6 [???????] fine meeting at night I got home 11 or 12 oclock Miss Fannie Johnston professed this evening Lowry came here this morning to work got ticks & Put Tar On my Cows & yearlings Mr Mattherly making Mrs Wyatts & Andrews Shoes 5 finished getting up Sams pt corn next to Mr Templetons & shucking it out to day weather moderate this morning Jacob P Graves Left his Gray mare here & took Bill to go to Danville & sell him for me for $150 or more If he could got my Horse last Saturday evening. 16th I went to S S Meeting getting up corn &C this evening Mr [L J] Mattherly worked on Kitchen till 12 oclock & then went to Millers Mill after Plank & Carried another Log I went to meeting this night fine meeting 17th Shucking Out corn to day & will put it away & Shucks in Granary -- Mr Mattherly at work [here] & Lowry. little cloudy & cool Housed corn Put shucks in Granary Fanning wheat, making Pen for chaff &C 1872 Oct 18th Mr Mattherly carried 2 Logs to Millers to to day for Kitchen - fine weather 19th Mr Mattherly will carry 2 more Logs to day for Kitchen Sewing wheat Sam & Lowry began 18 Oct 1872 to Sew Andrew Wyatt & mother gone to meeting to day Lewis & Ben cutting down stacks to sew wheat fine weather 21 Ben & Lowry sewing wheat Sam Hauling wood Stacks & Rails to day fine weather --

1872 Oct 22nd Sent my Cart to mill Mr Mattherly went [after] 1 Plank & carried six Bushels wheat for flour for me 1 Bushel for wheat for Lowry & some corn for Martin Smith My wife gone with Sallie home this morning carried Nannie Home this morning Sewing wheat where Sam had corn this evening late after Mr Mattherly got home with Plank we hauled up Shingles got by James Wright & sons 1290 in One place & 1012 in other place making 2302 shingles another Lot near Pannells road to Haul in yet, Boys Cutting down & Piling Stalks & finished, & Andrew & Lewis shrubing wheat thats Sewed & choping around stumps &C. Edmond Tucker cleaning out camp branch [began] last Thursday I reckon & will get done this week 23rd Rained this evening Halled up Shingles [this] Halling up Stacks & sewing wheat above the Road to Miss Martha Neales to day Killed Lamb yesterday Sent 1 quarter to Richard W when Sallie went home 24th Rained in morning & evening Sewing wheat & finished fresh ground above road, Sewed in the 2 ps fresh ground 9 1/2 Bowden wheat, cut Round Stumps & cut up Bushes & cleaned drain in ps next overseers House, Shelled Some Corn 25 Mr Mattherly at work on [axletree] &C till 2 oclock worked on road above spring Rained drisling Sent Ben to Millers after flour & Lowrys, but but did not get Martins 1/2 Bus meal wheat Mr Mattherly carried -- 26 Sam & Boys fencing & cleaning corners to day round up to Gate next to his House Mr Mattherly & Lowry getting Sills for Porch but did not get done I went to Mount Airy nails & to Mr Power after my shoes he half Soled cleared off Very Pretty this morning

1872 Oct 28th Mattherly & Lowry here & Edmond Here at work on Kitchen L. Sewing wheat Edmond cleaning out Ditch in Lower field where we were Sewing wheat 3 plows running Bill plowing to day Andrew & Lewis shrubing in fresh ground for wheat 29th Sam Lowry & Ben Sewing wheat on Branch Andrew & Lewis shrubbing fresh ground for wheat Mr Mattherly got Cart & gone to Mill & Load Plank for himself 30 Sam Lowry & Ben Sewing wheat in Lot Andrew & Lewis Pulling corn Halled up 1 Load corn & 1 Stack fodder & got Shoats out of corn field Mattherly not Here, James Wright finished getting 5 Thousand Shingles @ $3.50. 31 Finished sewing wheat in Lot & begun in fresh ground, shucking out corn Halled up from Bars in fresh field & Housed it & put away shucks &C Sam Lowry & Ben Plowing yet - Nov 1 Sam Lowry & Ben Sewing wheat in fresh ground Jacob Here & [Mary] James till 10 oclock to night Halled up all the Shingles 5000 Halled up Potatoe Vines Pea fines Lightwood for [Tar] &C 2 or 3 Loads wood Lewis & Andrew 2 sent Beef Hide to Tan Starkeys Tan [yd] Killed Beef to day Rose - - Finished sewing wheat in fresh ground to day at 12 [oclock] Planted onions sold Jacob P Graves 70 [lbs] Beef - Mr Mattherly worked 2/3 of this day Rained Saturday night clear 3rd Sunday clear 4 Mr Mattherly & Lowry here M. Jointing Shingles fixed granary door & Kitchen Door & we began to gather my corn & Hauled up [?] I went to Mount Airy & Jacobs to day - 5. Fine day Election day for President of the United States Sam Roper stayed at home & Pulled corn Lowry here helping me Pull Corn & Sew wheat he went offf lost the day at the Election Sam Sent to Mill [to] Millers Mill Hauled up 3 Loads [corn] I went to the Election

1872 Nov 6th Raining Smartly today Pulled some Corn & Hauled up 3 Loads in [Shucks] it Rained so hard I told Sam to Stop pulling & Haul Some wood for him & me, still cloudy Let Mr John Lewis have my Buggy to [bring] his Wife to his Fathers, he was to be married to day 7 I went to Mr Starkeys got my Leather Mr Mattherly had my waggon & mules & went after wheat to Mr Worsham Bookers &C got about 12 Bushels . Sam Roper & his Boys went to corn [Shuck] at Tobys Mr Lewis, Lowry did not come, - cleared off Very pretty this morning -- 8th Mr Mattherly gone to Wm Moses after wheat Brot Home 17 or 18 Bushel wheat & lost [Mollies] Collar she came home pulling waggon without any collar Mr Mattherly went to Wm Tuckers but did not find it. - 9th Kit Hubbard came here yesterday I was gone to the C H. Stayed all day & this morning He took the mules & waggon & went by Mt. Airy down to Mr Hubbards after Some Corn We finished getting up my corn this morning & our folks been shucking all day Nannie & me went to meeting to day -- 10 Saturday & Sunday Nannie & me went S S. Meeting had a fine Sermon & Baptising 11th I am shucking out my corn to day rained a little Edmond Martin Mr Mattherly after 12 oclock Ed & Wm Bailess & Sam Tucker & own Gang with Lowry shucking, Mr Moses came here last night I went up to Jacobs for him to witness Power of Attorney about R R Papers & give them to Mr [Jos] M Moses - 12th Cleared off corn to [went] to House finished shucking yesterday Pulling & Halled up 4 Loads [?????] Mr Mattherly & Lowry Hewed [???] Sills by 12 October Lowry went to Pulling Sams corn [?Mr] M rounding Shingles for Porch quite cool & windy in evening
