Dear Mother:

I did not intend to write today but I had a great surprise today. I thought you would like to hear about it right away. This morning I was told to be in uniform and on the bridge at one o'clock. I did not know what they wanted me for. When I went up with two other Marines we found a group of sailers there too. No one knew what we were there for until an officer cam and told us just before the Captain came out. We were going to get the Purple Heart. The Captain pinned medals on us and made a nice speech. It was a real thrill.

The medal is on a purple ribbon with a white boarder on either side. The medal it self is in the shape of a heart. With a gold edge. The center is purple with the head of Wasington, I believe it is, in the center. About the head is a small shield with red stars in it. It is very beautiful. I'll be sending it home soon.

There is no more to say for today. Give my love to all.

Your loving son Georgie
