forest", a type which experiences
several months of comparatively
dry climate. This evidently is
a wetter zone, on the yearly
average, than the deciduous
forest below. The trees grow
more closely together, vines
reaching to the tree tops are
common, epiphytic growth
is noticeable but certainly no
extensive, and understory growth
is taller than more permanent.
Fallen branches and some logs
cut for forestry experiments
are scattered about through
the understory of grass, bushes,
and tall herbaceous plants.
One excellent collecting spots
(located a few hundred
yards up the road from the
monastery parking area)
was a stream valley below
the road, overshadowed by tall
trees with dense foliage, used
by the Forestry Department
for experimental planting of
seedlings. The small trees and
some undergrowth
had been cleared, leaving

a carpet of low-growing
herbs and small shrubs
and some swamp-loving plants
along the creek. Collecting
in this area at 950 meters was excellent even
during light showers.

The black light was
placed across a dirt side
road at 815 meters elevation
(about 15 road miles W. of
Chieng Mai), surrounded
by fairly tall forest and
the usual roadside "weed"
and thorny vine growth.
Collecting was poor at the
light- perhaps because of a
nearly full moon shining
through thin overcast.
