rest areas were particularly
good because flowers planted
attracted many insects. A patch
of tall, very distant forest
was sampled also, though
insects were not plentiful there.
The forest was quite dry, and
the mixed deciduous and evergreen
species of trees and shrubs
indicated a rather dry monsoon
climate. In more open areas grass
clumps covered the ground,
and large bamboo clumps
were common in the area.

Weather partially cloudy,
with light showers 78° F.

STOP 286 - THAILAND: KHAO-YAI
NATIONAL PARK, 750 MI.,
VII-26-62
3000 specimens.

Tall rainforest in nearly
original condition over a large
area of rolling countryside on
the edge of the Korat Plateau
(see also STOP 285). Extensive patches
of rainforest interspersed with
large open grassland downs -

a tall coarse grass, green at
this season, Camp situated on
a shelf which drops off
into a rocky stream bed
below, with a beautiful
waterfall, surrounded by
jungle. Many specimens were
collected along this stream,
in the sunny glades near the
water, or in the deep shade
of the forest where the ground
is carpeted with low herbaceous
plants, leaf mold, and
rotting logs. The forest on
the slopes is of adrier type,
with more bamboo.

Black light collecting -
fair - 70° F - evening. Weather -
partially cloudy and windy
at times.

Khao-Yai Park is a very
good place for biological work.
One can either camp of stay in
cottages which are under construction
at this time. Good jungle is
readily accessible, and the alti-
tude is such that the climate
is more pleasant than that of
the rice bowl.
