Q. 96 Who made the settlement between the Contract & Finance Company and the Central Pacific Railroad Company so as to determine what amount the Contract & Finance Company was entitled to receive from the Central Pacific Railroad Company of Cali=fornia.

A. Well, I do not recollect the details of how those settlements were brought about.

Q. 97 Who issued the stock which the Contract & Finance Company received from the Central Pacific Railroad Company of California?

A. I think the President and Secretary of the Company.

Q. 98 The Stock book "is"[crossed out] was kept in your possession as Secretary, is it not.

A. It is.

Q. 99 "Is"[crossed out] Was that stock generally issued by you after being signed by the President & yourself.

A. Well, if you mean by issued, delivered to the parties it usually was delivered by me personally or by some of my clerks.

Q. 100 When stock was to be issued it was generally delivered by you as Secretary to the person entitled to receive it? A. It was.

A. I presume it was I do not remember undoubtedly it was.

Q. 102 You think it was?

A. I think it was.

Q. 103 Do you recollect to whom you delivered it on behalf of the Contract and Finance Company?

A. William E. Brown Secretary of the Contract & Finance Company.

Q. 104 Who, at the time that this work was being done by the Contract and Finance Company, "spoken of here"[crossed out] was the President of that Company?

A. I do not know.

Q. 105 Was not Samuel A. Hopkins, president during a portion of the time that this work was being done?

A. I do not think he was at that time.

Q. 106 Was not Charles Crocker president of the Contract & Finance Company during a portion of the time, that this work was being done.

A. I do not think he was at that time.

Q. 107 Was not Charles Crocker president of the Contract and Finance Company during a portion of the time?

A. I do not know.

Q. 108 Do you know whether Mark Hopkins was ever president of the Contract and Finance Company.

A. I never knew that he was.

Q. 109 What position did Mark Hopkins hold in the Central Pacific Railroad Company besides being a director?

A. He was its first Secretary, for a few months after its organization and afterwards was Treasurer I believe continuously, during his life-time.

Q. 110 Samuel A. Hopkins, spoken of, was he an officer of the Central Pacific Railroad Company of California?

A. He was not.

Q. 111 Was he a relative of Mark Hopkins spoken of?

A. He was a nephew of Mark Hopkins.

Q. 112 He is living still?

A. No sir; he is dead.

Q. 113 Is the Samuel A. Hopkins spoken of, living if you know?

A. He died several years since.

Q. 114 How long ago?

A. He died four or five years ago.

Q. 115 Do you know the principal stockholders of the Contract & Finance Company?

A. I do not.

A. It was transferred to various parties, I believe.

A. It was; yes sir.

A. Yes sir.

Q. 124 To whom did it pass from the Contract & Finance Company?

A. To various parties I could only tell by an examintation in detail.
