& the ship usually keeps to a steady 18–19 knots.
We met with a funny experience
in the Canal Zone. Because if the ship
being in ballast it would have meant a
charge of $1500.00u/s to have taken the
passengers through the Canal. Therefore—
we were transferred to shore & made the
trip overland! We had supper in the Am.
Club in Balboa & were taken in
a launch to meet the ship out in the
Road. A Japanese passenger, in turn, was
kept aboard. We thoroughly enjoyed the
experience though it was too late a day for
the children. The amusing highlight of the
transference was that all our baggage
was set ashore too.
After Panama our next port of
call was Long Beach, Cal., where we arrived
yesterday the 9th July. We are now on the run
to San Francisco this foggy weather & the fog horn
blaring out every 2 minutes. We liked Long
Beach & it was obvious to us that there is
much money about & lots of work. My children,
wife & I went ashore and we few hours to
disperse & a change from the ship & sea.
Many things are much cheaper than in B.A.[Buenos Aires]
but a haircut is stiff at a $1.00. I have
no connections there & thus didn’t get a
smattering of insight into conditions & life
in that port.
