bound Barque alowd [allowed] the long boat to lowered and twelve
passengers & one sailor sett [set] off amd after rowing forty five [forty-five]
minutes arrived along side the Barque Croten [Croton] of New York
bound to Californey [California] with fifty five [fifty-five] N. Y. yankees.

After remaining there some time the boat returned with
sixteen of ther [their] men. Twelve others and myself went
aboard the second time. The boats continued going from

You can imagene [imagine] the the feeling that prevailed better than
I can describe. 20th We amused ourselves to day [today] in dissecting
a Shark we caugh [caught] it measured seven feet six long &
weighed two hundred # [pounds] all anxious to get a part. I recd [received]
one of its fins for my share. For fear the Water would
not hold out we were put in allowanc [allowance] each man [?]
but three qts. [quarts] pr [per] twenty for [four] hours. There has been considerable
quarling [quarreling] betwen [between] the Capt & mates which has made very
unpleasant to the passengers. Rivalry I beleave [believe] is the cause.

We have been very much disappointed in our style of
living but as I had made up my mind to live differanty [differently]
after leavig [leaving] home I will bare it with Christian Jenteles [Gentiles] de
& hope for the better. I will give you an idea how we
have been living. Fresh pork once or twice a week fresh bread once
a week bein [bean] soup apple sauce [applesauce] twice a week rice in some shape
or other every dy. The balanc [balance] of the time hard bread & salt
beef & pork. One # [pound] of butter has lasted twelve of us for
forty days. With all the hard ships [hardships] we have endured I
have no occasion to regret leaving home / was in hope that
I will be well rewarded for my enterprize [enterprise]. I would of written
to Nash but he spoke of leaving town in the Spring. tele [tell] him to write
