My Dear Mother,

As the mail closes Wednesday
evening the 15th inst. I will commence writing you this
evening. I am well & hearty -- have commenced
housekeeping again "on my own hooks" that is to say
alone, I have got a room next adjoining the one
Sam & I lived in last winter, which is now oc-
cupied by Wm. Green [William Green] from Townsend Harbor & another
man. My operations at mining did not amount
to much -- as you will see I am now back again in
S.F. & have given up mining altogether for I do not
like it for it is too uncertain business

I had no right to try it again for from my ex-
perience last summer, I knew I should never like
to live nor work in the mines, but as Sam had con-
cluded to go, & as I was doing nothing at that time I
thought I would try my luck again, which I trust
I have done for the last time & to my entire satis-
faction. I have not heard from Sam since the 2d of May
which was the time that we separated. I am sorry that
I wrote what I did with regard to his health as I fear
his mother & friends were somewhat alarmed about him,
but they have probably heard ere now of the improved
state of his health at the time he left for the mines & I have
not doubt but what that he is now enjoying good health,
as he was quite well for several days previous to his departure
Good night
