Mother "I was sorry indeed, although
not much surprised to hear of the death of
Esq. Jewett" After he had been sick so long
I made up my mind that he could never
recover his health again, although I thought he
might possibly linger along for a number of
months, but it was otherwise appointed as we
now see. His family must take his death
very hard as I think he was a kind, indulgent
husband & father -- still they were probably prepared
for the worst, & for a long time were aware that
he never could recover.

How lonesome & dreary must Mrs. J's house
appear to her on her return from New York?

How changed & lonely --

As you say it will now be necessary
to make some change in Chas. & Hatties affairs
A new guardian must be appointed & their
property made over by the Administrator of Esq.
J's estate to the new guardian.

You mentioned Mr. S. A. Jewett, as being
in your opinion a good man to be appointed
in his fathers stead, & wished to know what I
thought about it. Since I read your letter I
have thought the matter over & taking all things
