San Francisco March 12th 1854

Dear Mother

The mail which left New York
Feb 6th has not yet arrived, as I have recieved [received]
no letter from you since I last wrote
but as you have written me so regularly
I expect one when the Steamer arrives "of
course." At any rate should write you whether I
receive one from you or not.

The Pacific Mail Steamship Company, have been
so unfortunate of late having lost one or two of
their best boats, besides having others disabled, that
they are now, obliged to run some of their old
slow boats. Consequently the mails are not recieved [received]
here as regularly as they used to be a few months
ago, & I dare say the effect is the same on the Atlantic
side. The "Nicaragua Steamer" arrived here a week ago
yesterday, but was dispatched from New York only
two days ahead of the mail Steamer, & from accounts
which I notice in the Atlantic papers I see the "Nic-
aragua Boats" generally arrive in New York from
here ahead of the mail boats, so that the "Nic-
aragua Route" is fast becoming the favorite route
with the travelling community. The best steamer for
that line brought upwards of Twelve Hundred Passengers.
