San Francisco, Sunday, May 28th, 1854 --

Dear Mother,

I am again allowed the
pleasure of writing you once more -- a blessing for
which I feel thankful. As I have often told you it
is a pleasant task to write you, and a still great-
er pleasure to recieve [receive] letters from you in return.

Yours of the 16th Apl. [April] was recieved [received] the 18th inst.
Was of course very happy to hear that you were all well
at the time you wrote and I hope Harriet will
now continue to enjoy good health for the time
to come. I think you must have had rather strange
weather about the middle and latter part of Apl. [April]
and rather uncommon for the season of the year, but
now I suppose you are experiencing beautiful
weather, as usual the last of May --

Here in San Francisco, the weather yesterday and
today has been as fine as one could wish, and
much finer than last year at this time

I do believe this to be as healthy country as any
in the world for I know of but very few cases of
sickness where it is not brought on by habits which
are contrary to the Laws of Nature, such as drinking
&c, which I am sorry to say are quite common
