10 O'clk [O'clock] Thurs. Morn June 1st, Mother: I have just recieved [received]
your letter dated May 1st the mail steamer "Sonoma"
having arrived from Panama last evening, and
as the mail does not close until 1 Oclock [O'clock] will
write you a few lines more as I cannot bear
the idea of only writing you two pages in return
for four. I am very happy to hear that you
were all well when you wrote and I see no
reason why, when enjoying good health you should
not be happy. I hope Harriet will continue to
enjoy good health and that she will send me
her picture as soon as convenient. The letter she
wrote me May 1st was very acceptable. I should of
course prize it highly as coming from a sister and
conveying the pleasing news that she was in the
enjoyment of health & happiness.

The above together with the fact of its being a
very well written letter, renders it unusually
acceptable, and I hope she will find it
convinent [convenient] to write me quite often.

I will answer her recd [received] this morning
by next mail -- should be glad to answer
it by this, but shall not have time, as I
must write a few lines more to J. A. Tucker
as I am going to send him $200. by this
Steamer, in part payment for the goods which
I ordered of him, the middle of April --
