My Dear Mother

I was not disappointed
when the last mail arrived, for I received
two letters from you, one dated the 2d and
one the 16th of July. The one dated the 2d I expect-
ed to recieve [receive] the 1st Aug. but did not do so until
the 19th it having lain over one mail some-
where between here and East Pepperell, but
it was just as acceptable as though I had
recieved [received] it sooner, and I am very glad
that you write me so regularly by every mail
for it affords me great pleasure to hear from
you so often. I was happy to hear that you
were all comfortably well when you wrote and
I hope you will continue to be blessed with good
health through the warm weather not only of
this season but for many seasons to come.

I also recieved [received] letters from my friends
Lizzie Lewis, and J. A. Tucker and I
think It appears as though they imagine that I
am making money mighty fast, for Mr T.
writes that he supposes I am making money
"hand over fist" and even Miss Lewis writes,
that she thinks I am trying to "Gas" them a little
for she hears from other sources that I am making

[written vertically in the left margin]

9 Oclock [O'clock] Thursday Eve Aug 31st the mail Steamer arrived from Panama at
1/2 past three this afternoon but the Post Office will not be open until tomorrow
morning so I cannot exactly say that your letter of the 1st Aug has been recieved [received]
