I believe I wrote to you in my last letter that
I had just then received a letter from Sam
Tucker
[Samuel P. Tucker], and that I was expecting him down
here New Years, but I have not seen him
as yet, and conclude he did not start
owing to its having commenced raining a
day or two before he was intending to
start, which has made it very bad trav-
elling, having rained most of the time
for the past eight days.

It has really seemed like the weather we
had here two years ago, when Sam and I
were living together here in San Francisco
and I do not know but what it will be
quite as bad yet, for it is still raining
with every prospect of its continuing to rain
for the present. Thus our room we find
to be rather more leaky than we expected
it would be, while we were having pleasant
weather. We are obliged to get all the pails we
have got, beside our wash basin, into the
middle of the room in order to catch as
much of the water that leaks through as
possible, but after all our trouble, we find
our room to be rather damp, but we
have got a good stove, and we generally
build up a good fire in the evening after
we get through work, and heat up well
