You say that I am perhaps aware
that Mr S. is engaged to Mary Dow. I
know that was the "talk" before he left
home to come out here, but I thought
from what I have heard him say
here, that he had no particular attach-
ment for her or any one else that
he left behind beyond the bounds of
friendship, but from what you wrote
about he, and Miss D. attending parties
and concerts, in company with each other
that the engagement between them if
ever broken off, was again renewed
and I should not wonder now to
here that they are married.

I heard from Sam Tucker [Samuel P. Tucker] a day
or two since by way of a man who
came down here from Columbia. Sam
was well, and I guess meeting with
good success at mining.

Please give my love to Chas [Charles] & Hattie [Harriet]
and remember me to my friends
