San Francisco Aug 14th 1855 - Tues. Eve.

My Dear Mother,

How do you do tonight?
Quite well I hope -- I am as well as usual
and situated just the same as I have
been for a year past. I am always pleased
to hear that you, Charles and Harriet, are
well, and happy, as it makes me feel
well and happy also. ---

Last Sunday morning about five Oclock [O'clock]
a man, that is acquainted with Mr Noyes [Ephraim Noyes]
and myself came up to our room and
said that our stand where I tend was
broken open, and our goods all scattered
about. We then got up as soon as we
could and went down to the stand where
we found things the same as represented
to us. One part of the stand had been
broken open by breaking the doors, and our
showcase, containing knives, fish hooks &c
had been taken away. A lot of Novels
had also been taken out, but were strewn
about and left. After looking about for
awhile, we found our showcase directly
across the street from our stand, among
the ruins of the St Charles Hotel, which
was burned last February --- In the showcase
