San Francisco Sept 16th 1855

My Dear Mother,

I received your letter dated
Aug 16th the 12th inst. much earlier then I usually
receive your letters after they are written, -- but
still I think, I have received them all sooner
or later although one or two have lain over
one mail, but when such is the care the
next mail is sure to bring me two, which
shows that you always write, which is very kind
indeed of you. I know of nothing more acceptable
to me than letters from home, and I hope it
may ever be convenient for you to write me
whenever I am absent from home as regularly
as you have ever done since I have been in Cal.

I have received since I left New York
seventy four letters from you, for which I am
very thankful, as they have been a great source
of pleasure to me, and I shall endeavor to
repay you for all your trouble, in some way
if it is possible for me to do so.

I was happy to hear that you, Charles, and
Harriet, were all as well as usual, and getting
along so finely with all your undertakings,
your piano, farming, &c -- hope you will
continue to enjoy good health ---
