My Dear Mother,

I have concluded to com-
mence writing you this evening, for fear I
might not have another so good an oppor-
tunity to do so before the mail leaves again
for the Atlantic States.

Now Mr Noyes [Ephraim Noyes] is absent, I find that I
am obliged to be attending to our business
closely, from 6 oclock [o'clock] in the morning, until one
half past ten oclock [o'clock] in the evening, and
by the time we get all closed up, I feel
so sleepy that I cannot write or do any-
thing else, so I improve all my leisure time
in writing to my friends, whom I do not
wish to neglect even if business is pressing,
and you for one may rest assured that
I shall not neglect writing you for a
single mail, unless I am by any circumstance
unable to write you.

I am very well this evening, but cannot
say that I am quite as pleasantly situated
as I was when I last wrote you, for I miss
Mr Noyes very much, in many respects ---

First, he is to me a good friend, and
companion. Then again when he is absent

[written vertically in the left margin]

Evening of Oct 4th I am as well as usual, tonight -- but feel rather tired
as I have been quite busy all day. Still I have got 3 hours work to do
yet before I can go to bed. I hope you Chas and Hattie are all well
as usual

I have written a few lines to H.
Good Night
H. A. P. [Henry A. Parker]
