I think $30,000 or $40,000 however, is a much
larger sum than he was ever owing, and
in all probability, the affair, although bad
enough is greatly exaggerated.

Mr T. I consider to be a good friend to
me. He has sent me during the past year
between $1000. and $2000. worth of goods.

I think he would have sent them to me
anyway, whether he had had an idea of
winding up his business in the way he has
or not, and I presume he would have let
me had them at the same prices that he
has charged for them now. He writes that
he shall send me some few goods by next
Steamer, and put his miniature in also

In return I think I shall send him $1000.
If he can enjoy wealth gained in the
way I think he is gaining his, he is welcome
to it for all me, although he thinks that
I might, if placed in just the same situation
that he was in one year ago, try to get out
in just the same way that he has, but I
differ with him. I find that by being industrious,
economical, and steady, I can
more than make a living without trying
to take advantage of those who place confidence
in me. Do not mention to any one what I
have written on this subject, or what I wrote
