Oh father Let Not these Sad news effect you become reconciled to the Loss Oh how many hundreds have shared the same fate with a friend even to releave [relieve] their wants but he had care Many yes Many have I seen carried to their graves in this country whoes [whose] friends will long mourn their Loss the last vessal [vessel] that arrived buried 56 this country is filling up thousand are Pouring in from all quarters hundreds are falling victims to Disease contracted on the way here from being starved to Death on board of vessals [vessels] who have more than Double their Number of Passengers than the Law will allow them to carry they do not take on board of the vessals [vessels] one half Provisions if there is any more coming from our part of the country tell them never to take a sail vessal [vessel] on this side but they all had better stay at at home I have seen more suffering among emigrants than any one can imagine I think by the next Mail I shall hear from the American Consul give not away to Despair hope for the best Morgan will be with you before you get this I can not write any more

Dear Nice I received your letter of Sep 12 1852 which gave me a grate [great] deal of Pleasure to hear from you and all the Rest of our folk little did I expect to hear the death of both of them Charles Martin & Amy Both I Had so not Expected the deat [death] of Lane & Saley than them boys But so it is we no [know] not the hour we are Cald [called] for I am sue a poor written on I kould [would] write moore [more] than I do you wanted to no [know] whether I was mared [married] I am not mared [married] whether I Even shall be I think that I shall stay hear [here] this winter I heve [have] a tolerable Good Chance in making Hats sene [since] I was at your house I have ben [been] a good many thousan [thousand] miles I was up the misune [Missouri River] to Indindis [Indiana] last summer and was agoing [going] to crs [cross] the plains to Caleforne [California] but my helth [health] wernt [was not] good a nif [enough] I like to see diferent [different] Parts of the Cuntry [Country] but I mus [must] stop & settle down some whare [where] for I getting in years lona [long] I Had littl [little] thuts [thoughts] of your out living all your sisters & Brothers I have wrote you a few lines In answer to your letter if yu [you] wrote me it is hardly leghal [legal] I shall Close these lines By saying By Saying I remain your afichenet [affectionate] loving uncle Levi Brown I shall send you 2 Papers for you to Read Give my Love to them all as soon as you receive Write Rite [right] By a next mail

Coloma Oct 18th 1855

Dear father

it is a longe time Since I have heard from you My health has been very Poor but I have not been Laid up I intended to have come home this fall But Morgan Left me last Spring when I was in Debt and Could not get out instead of Staying and helping me out and My Creditors here about to force Payment and I would have to Sacrifice Property and I sold my House that cost me over $500000 Dol [dollars] to a widow Lady by the Name of Siminson the wife of the Doctor who took Care of me when I was sick in fifty one I sold for the Sum of 22 hundred Dol [dollars] and have kept the Store Still agoing [going] I have Married the Lady I sold to and have built on an addition and am living in it the Shop has done but little my health has been so poor that I could not in it and have been Dependent on hired help and Sanford has Done all he could to injure me in business but his wife has left him and I think he sent her home

there has been a good Deal of Murdering & Rabing [robbing] here this Season there will be 2 men Hung here next week for Murder a great many has been Sent to the State Prison and the Jail is full now

The Election was carried by the know nothing they Elected every officer in the State I want to come home but I so knot not know when I shall ever be able to come or not I am Step father to 3 Children 1 girl 12 years old 1 girl 6 years 1 boy 3 years You may think I am in quite a family Business but I will try and manage them if Morgan had Staid [stayed] and helped me I Could have Come home with Some Money but it is otherwise Decreed give my love to the children I supposed Mary Eliza is quite a Lady by this time give my love to her and to the Rest I should like to Have David here to clerk for me but I think my wife can help me she can talk french [French] & German and there is a good Many of Both here I have not heard from Woods lef he left here last Spring for the North and I have not heard from him since
