I wish it was so that I could come home this fall but I cannot Mr S Delong of Sanfrancisco [San Francisco] Left on the last Steamer for home give my Love to all of the folks I do not Know what to write more the weather is very hot and no appearance of rain yet

The dust is very Deep I was married in Sanfrancisco [San Francisco] and Coming home I got a Carriedge [carriage] in Sacremento [Sacramento] and left the city in the eavening [evening] and drove all night and got home in the morning 55 miles a Pleasant Ride over mountains & gulches with a pair of Spanish Horses there is nothing more I can write at Present I send Papers every mail

Coloma June 3rd, 1856

Dear father

it is a long time since I Last heard from you and a Number of Mails has arrived and I have not Received any letter from Lockport it seams [seems] as though I was forgotten, the mail will be here in about an Hour I expect and than I suppose I shall get Some letters I Send you this mail a Lot of papers in which you will see that there is a great Deal of excitement in this state on the act of the organisation [organization] of the Vigilance Committee again in Sanfrancisco San Francisco there has been by the statistics 1400 pe persons Murdered in the City of Sanfrancisco San Francisco since 1849 and there has been only 5 persons hung by the authorities, and a short time ago a Notorious gambler Named Cora Charles Cora Shot the United States marshal, Gen. William H. Richardson, in the Street and was Likely to get Clear and Soon after through the agency of John B. Weller, got a gambler and associate of Cora Charles Cora appointed to fill the vacancy occured [occurred] by the Death of Richardson which Caused a great Deal of feeling all over the State and the Editor of the Bulletin, James King of William exposed their Nefarious plans and it was Rumored that he would be shot if He was not Carefull [careful] and He exposed the Character of James Casey a State prison convict of Sing Sing Ny New York

who had been Elected Superviser [Supervisor] of a District by a Large vote where he was not known to be a Candidate untill [until] 5 Day [days] after the Election but he was Elected by Ballot box Stuffing

He met James King and Shot him Down the people organised [organized] the Committe [Committee] 26 Hundred under arms proceeded to the jail and took him out with Charles Cora and Hung them Both they arrested Yankee Sullivan and a good many others Sullivan applied to the British Consul for protection as an english [English] subject. the consul said he would take him under his protection and send him Back in irons as he was an escaped Convict, So he committed Suicide by cutting his arm till he Bled to Death

there is a great deal of excitement it is rumored that the govener [governor] with Supreme Judge and General Wool Wooll Woll will order out the go United States troops to put Down the Committee, if they Should undertake it at present there would not be a United States Soldier or officer, or gamblier [gambler] or Shoulder Striker be left to tell the late Blood would flow like water The committee have under arms 26 Hundred men and in 2 hours this could increase their numbers to 10 thousand and by telegraph & express in 2 Day [days] could muster

over 50 thousand fighting men with 8 or 10 peaces [pieces] of Cannon with any amount of other arms Should the general government step in now to protect Scoundrals [Scoundrels] of every Hue and stripe Death will be the consequence

it is a perfect State of excitement in this State The Elections have been Controled [controlled] and those that are in power have been elected by ballot Box stuffing Murderers & gamblers have Reighned [reigned] Supreme untill [until] the people can Bear it No Longer and have Rose in their Majesty to proclaim the puriety [purity] of the Ballot Box and Downfall of Drunker and gambling Politicain [Politician] and Detestable Brawlers and Ruffans [Ruffians] who Rule our Courts of Justace [Justice]

The excitement on the Receipt of the news of the massicure [massacre] at panama [Panama] was Dreadful Could there have been any way of passage Down got thousand would have gone to Revenge the Death of those Slain, and now the News of the the Dreadfull [dreadful] catastrophy [catastrophe] which has happened upon the Railroad and the events that are now transpiring in San Francisco has nearly turned the people of this State into a state of lunaticy [lunatics] the mail Has just arrived and I will go up and see if there is any letter I have not got any letter I do not see why I do not get More letters than I Do

My Health is good My wife [wife's] Health is poor

Business is very full there Has been a good deal of excitement in this County about the Removal of the county seat a special Election was Held and we Beat Placerville by 1500 votes majority
