there has nothing occurred since my last scarcely
worth writing about. the drama I wrote about
in my last came very near ending in a tradedgy [tragedy].
in a day or two after my letter was written the
constable arrested two men that were driving
the mules across the bridge one of them proved
to be a man that was sentenced to states
prison for ten years and as they were taking him
down the river he jumped over board [overboard] and was
supposed to be drownded [drowned]. the prisoners were
brought into town about noon and as soon
as the news spread the people began to
gather in and began to talk about hanging
the prisoners about four o clock [o'clock] the justice
and constable began to think that if they
did not get the prisoners off to the county
jail about twelve miles from here they
would be hung. so they got a couple of buggys [buggies]
and horses and appointed special constables
to prevent the people from getting the prisoners.
the constables then tried to get the prisoners
to the buggies which was the signal for
the fight to commence down went a constable
then a citizen then a clinch then about a
dozen men pulling and hauling kicking and
scratching. then the people got prisoners
now one while they were engaged on him the
other was in charge of the head constable
