Panama May 6th 1850

Dear Wife and Children I write you a few lines
to let you know that I am Well hoping, these few lines
may find you all the same. the first Day or two
when we started from new york New York I was little see sick [seasick]
it was very Rough sea I could not Eat, since that time
I have been Readdy [ready] for my meals, fist stopping plase [place]
was Savannah Charlston Charleston there Peter Brown writ [wrote] and Savannah
and next Havannah Havana Peter Writ [wrote] again this last Plase [place]
is on the Island of Cuba quite a large Citty [city] and
butiful [beautiful] looking country no winters all kinds of fruit
like oranges & green & Ripe Continuly [continually] the Whole year
but the Most Most Misreble [miserable] looking Plase [place] of Inhabitants
that I Ever had seen till I arvied [arrived] at shaggares Chagres, Panama no
White Peeple [people] here or at havanna Havana only a few americans [Americans]
that is a doing, busness [business] in Both Plases [places] In these Plases [places]
you will see the Children fruning around as naked as they
was born in the World We arrived at shagres Chagres, Panama on wensday [Wednesday]
April 24th 1850 stayed there one night and nearly two Days
and then hired boats and the natives Rowed and Poled us
up to a Plase [place] caled [called] gorgona Gorgona, Panama 60 Miles Arrived on sunday [Sunday]
night tented out here for two or three Days & nights and then
I hired a Man to carry my Bag & trunk and gave him
seven dollars, on his back to Panama 27 Miles, and
Walked after him which took two Days I arived [arrived] here May 2
the Climate is Warm as we have any time in sumer [summer]
when home Although I do not think the Plase [place] verry [very] healthy
Although I dont hear of Much sickness Provisions is
