For thus the poor laborer may actually
expend more in a year's time than
his wealthy neighbour [neighbor] who has con-
-sumed far more.

So it is a miserable economy of ex-
-istence to spend it in constraint & tri-
-fling indulgences – that finally pall the
senses – to vegetate like a useless plant a bramble
aimless & unaspiring – Saying "let us eat, &c. [etc.]" –

While the man of toil, of energy, of
earnest pursuit, of noble doing & daring
shall as incidental to his life – enjoy
all innocent pleasures in greater fulness
than the sensualist – for his appetites are
keen by abstinence – & the purity & buoyancy
of his mind add zest to enjoyment.
