Without walls, they had no assurance
of quiet – could not sleep in peace –
must dwell amid constant alarms
– must expect to be taken cap-
-tive by the first invading force.

3 So a man void of self-govt [self-government] is
exposed to every outward foe.
Has no assurance that aught of good
he has shall remain his.
Is always afraid of something –
but not of the right thing.

Every trifle annoys him – Slight ills
vex him – anybody can upset his
equilibrium. He is incapable of re-
