at Sutterville three miles below the
mouth of the American river [River], and one or two elsewhere. All
these places offered advantages
and facilities of their own. There is

to every other, but nothing could
prevent the building of Sacramento
close upon the river's brink, and as
close upon the American river [River], at the con-
-fluence of the two; where the winds could
howl over it, and the waters del-
