This conflict of forces & struggle of Soul is termed in SS [Song of Songs] a war.
The image is full of significance – almost of terror!!
Brings to mind &c [etc.] – But our warfare (whose weap^s [weapons]
are not carnal) is not sanguinary nor deplorable.

I. Subjec. [Subjection] A war of Extermination – & of Self-Conq. [Self-Consequence].
1. Of Exterm. [Extermination] bec. [because] t. [the] price, of sin is to be eradicated – wrong desires banished –
evil habits rooted out – the Soul renovated!

2. Of Self-Conq. [Self-Consequence] bec. [because] Anarchy has been there – passion domineered – prejud-
-ice & self-will triumphed – Sin led captive the man.
Now he rises up in t. [the] true dig. [dignity] of a man – curbs passion – silences
prejudice rebukes self-will – exiles sin thrusts out his foes – & rules
over his own Spirit.

3. Yet not this with Carnal weapons ~
a. No mere external appliances are sufficient to carry on this.
Moralities, charities, honesties, forms of worth, prayers, penances,
pilgrimages &c. [etc.] won't do. Some good in them, but no virtue. They may
impose on men – but G. [God] will not be deceived by them. Knows the heart ~
(b.) But weap^s [weapons] are. Truth, love, goodness, grace. Truth, arg. [argument], persuasion –
sealed by the Divine Spirit – on a willing mind – quick. consc. [conscience] – feeling heart.
Thes [These] are mighty to prostrate barriers – sap rotten, false foundations –
overthrow strong holds [strongholds] – cast down imaginations – humble t. [the] heart –
settle doubt & unbelief.

II. Object.^y [Objectively] Not Stop – Carry Conq. [Consequences] farther – out over t. [the] commun^y [community] ~
1. Must subdue individ^s [individuals], & t. [the] world by the might of our arms – yet these
are not carnal. Worlds warrior mounts – describe horse – rider
yelling, cursing, death-dealing – using phyic [physical], courage, brute force – daring,
force coercion, rashness, madness – without pity – "might makes right" ~

2. Must subdue – going forth in a simple, beautiful, panoply ~
Speak of it – as Paul has it. Esp. [Especially] that shield so effectual – that
Sword so pointed, keen, – cutting to the quick – laying bare the
warm, quivering, flesh – thrilling t. [the] very heart-strings [heartstrings] ~
