An Appreciation

Joseph Augustine Benton, D. D. [centered]
------------------------ [centered
Since the last meeting of the General Asso-
ciation this elder brother has been called
from our Earthly fellow ship [fellowship] to the pres-
ence fellowship of those who had preceded him
into the presence of their Lord.

Our commendation is little needed in
behalf of one who has already heard his
Master's voice, saying, "Well done, good and
faithful servant; enter thou into the
joy of thy Lord," but it is fitting that
we recall, briefly, the life and labors
of such an [a] one, and place on record
our appreciation of what he was and
of what he – did while among us.

Dr. Benton was born in Guilford, Conn. [Connecticut] May
7, 1818. He was a son of Daniel and Fanny
Ledyard (Eliot) Benton, his Mother being a
lineal descendant of John Eliot, the
"Apostle to the Indians." Both his parents
were possessed, of sterling Christian char-
acter.
