two enclose a valley of Six hundred miles in length
and watered by Streams flowing from both these ranges.
These in the Southern part united to form the San Joaquin [river]
and at the North the Sacramento [river]. The first flowing
north and the last in a southernly direction until
they meet and unite their waters at the head of
Suisoon [Suisun] Bay. Which is about 25 miles long & 5 wide
"Course westerly", this again empties by the Straits
of Carquinnies [Carquinez]"on which Benicia is situated) (1
mile wide & 4 miles long) with San Pablo (St Pauls)
Bay, directly west of Suisoon [Suisun], circular 12 miles in
diameter connected by a narrow Strait mill San
Francisco Bay (50 Miles long by 10 wide) about twenty
miles from whose northern extremity is the celebrated
Golden Gate or entrance. San F San Francisco is on the South
Side three miles in from the Sea. from San F [San Francisco]] to
the head of the Suisoon [Suisun] Bay is about 60 miles from thence
to Sacramento is Sixty more up the river of the same
name, twenty five miles above Sacramento is the mouth
of Feather River almost as large as the Sac [Sacramento River] itself
up Feather 35 miles is Marysville at the junction of
the Yuba & Feathers [rivers] and the head of the navigation.
Stockton is on the San Joaquin [river] about 60 miles
from the Bay. Sacramento & Stockton are each
120 miles from San F San Francisco, and Marysville is 180
