Marysville April 28th 1854
My Dear Sister
Yours and Murrays [Murray's] letters
were duly recieved [received] and I am much obliged to
you for your thoughtfullness [thoughtfulness] in providing means
for Sara to come out. I hardly think She will
venture however after getting my next letter, which
announced the new arrangement of the Steamboats
by which I lost my berth as agent.
Since then I have had to depend upon my forwarding
and Commision [Commission] business altogether but we have
Started and [an] opposition company in Marysville in
which I hope to get Something to do it is Sure
to Succeed every merchant in the place is interested
in it and of course it will controul [control] the
entire trade of the place. The other Company is
virtualy [virtually] a monopoly and this of course has
Started a Strong feeling of opposition to them
which in the end will cause their destruction
and you may believe I bear them no great good
will. I expect to have the pleasure of making
them Sweats [Sweat] before I am through with them.
I expect to get the Command of one of our boats
and it will give me great pleasure to run a Strong
opposition to them. Murray proposes to Send Some
money here for investment he cannot do better.
I can loan twenty thousand dollars on the best
