San Francisco Feb 4th 1855

Dear Mother,

How do you do this
Evening? I hope that you, Chas, Hattie
and all your friends, are as well as I am.

My health remains good, -- as good as
I could wish. How fortunate I have
been in this respect, ever since I left
home, as I have not been confined to
my room by sickness, one single day since
I have been in California. I often think
of it, and wish that the same blessing
may be extended to us all, throughout
the present year, which is now fast
wearing away. --- I can hardly realize
that the two longest months of winter have
already passed away and that Spring
will so soon be upon us, but of late
time seems to me, to pass away rapidly.

I did not forget the 1st day of Feby [February] --
however, -- the day when you commenced
the Fifty Fifth year of your existence

I cannot realize that you are so old,
for I have never seen you, otherwise than
well and active, and often when I look
