had to steal a much larger amount, I think
they let us off very cheap. Still it was more
of an amount, than I should feel willing
to lose very often, especially in that way ---

Mr Noyes [Ephraim Noyes] and I have now done business
together for fifteen months, and during that
time we have lost in every way, about $300
or $10 a month apiece. That amount would
be quite good wages at home clear of board
but still we do not look upon it here as
being a very severe loss ---

As soon as we found that our goods
were gone, I says to Mr Noyes, that we
should be obliged to stop in California
an extra month in order for to make up
our loss. Says he -- I am ready to go now
for if we stay much longer we may lose
what little we have got now, -- but I think
we shall be obliged to remain just about
the same as we now are twelve or fifteen
months longer, and do the best we can.

The mail Steamer with the mails
from New York, has now been due two or three
days, but has not yet arrived. I hope
however that she will get in tomorrow
morning, as I wish to hear from home again.

The Steamer instead of leaving here the 16th
as heretofore will not leave this trip until
