effort to build a town and erected some buildings as early as the
year 1844. John McDougall, his brother, first Lieut. [Lieutenant] Gov. [Governor] of Cal [California]
fell heir to this enterprise, and struggled for
a long time to make Sutterville the city
of the interior, near the head of deep-water
navigation. But, the younger Sutter secured
the adherence of nearly all the original tra-
-ders at the Fort, by conveying to them about
500 of the choicer lots of the newly located
City of Sacramento. So, Brownman & Co., Hens-
ley & Redding, Priest, Lee, & Co., and others formed
a combination too powerful to be resisted,
