Fifteen men, all but two of whom
were personally known to me, then;
and some, for many years thereafter;
So far as I know, only one, Demas Strong,
of Brooklyn, N. Y., has not passed over
into the land of Silence. The late U.S.
Judge Tweed of Arizona lived till a
year or two ago.

While these movements for a proper
governing of the city were going on, there
were more or less excitements and
disturbances taking place, as fore-
-shadowings of trying events. And be-
-fore the city was legally Chartered,
the flood of Jan. 1850, came on, for a
few days, in a mild way and showed
the need of regular authorities with
power to raise and disburse moneys.
