The year was near its close, when the
State's first participation in a Presidential
Election occurred. The City of Sacramento
polled about 5000 votes on the 2nd of No-
-vember 1852. These had hardly been counted
when a fire broke out in the heart of the
city, which was fanned by a fierce norther,
and was in a short time beyond human
Control, and raged till it could find
nothing more to consume. It swept over
36 blocks, and blotted out four-fifths
of the city, in a few hours time. The
tossing flames, mountain high, the rush,
crackling, and roar of that dreadful
night have never died out of the memory
of a being who was compelled to be a
witness. But some saved their money,
