Lewis J Ashby Letters

ReadAboutContentsHelp
Twenty-seven letters written by Private Lewis J. Ashby to his girlfriend Mildred A. Neher while serving in France, and occupied Germany. Lewis J. Ashby (sometimes spelled Louis in military documents) served with the 2nd Battalion of the 117th Engineers during World War I. This battalion was recruited at the outbreak of the war for immediate active service as combat engineers who performed the dangerous work of building roads, bridges, and putting up barb wire, often while under enemy fire. The 2nd Battalion was the first complete unit from California to see active service in France and the only one to serve through all of the campaigns on all of the important fronts.

you remember the drive two or three years ago when the British and French tried to take Mount Sec and lost [scratched out] men and only held the hill for 20 minutes? Our infantry went thru there and lost only about twenty men in the whole drive.

I was on that historic hill the other day and could view the surrounding country for miles. The town of Sec at the foot of Mont Sec and the surrounding towns are nothing but piles of rock, completely ruined under four years of incessant bombardment. Mont Sec is completely honeycombed with dug outs, the entrance being at the top of the hill and steps lead down some 85 or 90 feet below the surface.

The dugouts are large enough to hold thousands of men. During the drive we did some very dangerous but necessary work but luckily no body was hurt. I've had some wonderful and interesting experiences which I hope and expect to soon be able to spend many a wonderful evening relating them to you.

Dearest, you've never told me as yet what your work consisted of. So honey, write me a long letter telling all

about your lovable self. Now dear, just forget how to get the blues and keep that wonderful smile of yours all the time and if God wills I'll soon be back. I can't remember what I wrote you on July 2 but I assure you dearest, that I meant every word I said.

I hope you received the package I sent you from Paris and will try to get you something nicer at the first oppor-

-tunity. Let me know what you'd like. Harold just received some photos from Frank Moir showing Wheeler and his sister, Frank and another girl. The pictures were taken at the beach and it sure looked good. Some time ago I received a letter from Franks sister Eliazbeth, whom I've never met, she wrote, thinking to cheer me up, which was certainly sweet of her, don't you think?
