Dear Edward:

Yours written on the 12th of
Sept., came to hand about ten days ago.
This, however, has been my first
chance to put over a reply. I wrote
you some two months ago sending the
letter to your home in the States. I presume
the same past [passed] you on the pond. At any
rate, it was received by your folks and
has been forwarded, I understand.

It seems good to hear from you directly,
however, I've been hearing more or less about
you, Lesley et al indirectly through the
folks at home.

As for myself, I had the pleasure of
a trip to Aix-les-Bains, last month on
furlough. It was grand down there, and
I would willingly remain there until
hostilities cease, if they really needed me.
But as I undertsand there is a 2 lever
which needs someone's kind attention, I
had to come back to my organization.

As for getting to-gether, there is a chance
if we ever happen to be in the same vicinity.
I shall remember the numbers of your
regiment and ask every American I see of its
