was from Calif. & naturally she took him for one of us, and then he had the crust to ask for a ticket to her show in the evening. Herb. gave me the job to inform our Stanford friend, if he came to the theatre, to politely let him know in unmistakable terms that he was not wanted, that he had gained the dislike of all the Calif. boys, and we didn't care to see any more of him.

Our Stanford boy had hollared to Mr. Hearford that he was being abused and Mr. Hearford jumped all over Herb, Krusi, & Johnnie Wilton who were down at his office in the morning. He accused me of mutiny and I couldn't go to France as they didn't want such a character over there in the country. After much

talking the fellows managed to smooth it off a little for me. I went down to see him right after dinner, but was unable.

3:30 P.M. Tea at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, 46th St. & Madison Ave. The manager of the hotel gave us the use of the ball-room, one reception room, and small dining room. Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Jackling gave us $1300 to be divided among the boys for spending money for the extra week we have to stay in N.Y. There were 14 ambulances donated at Jane Cowl's Theatre Party and enough more were donated at the Ritz-Carlton to bring it up to 45.

to speak to Mr. Hearford about the flag episode. He had a few highballs and was feeling good. We put our arms around each other and had a fine time talking it over. He thought I was a fine fellow and said that "If I had been in your place I would have tried to do the same thing." Had the pleasure of eating dinner with Josephine Miller. Mr. Melone made a spendid speach[speech] and so did Ex. Pres. Roosevelt. Four or five other notibles [notables] spoke, including a representative of the British War Envoy to America. A joint banquit [banquet] of both the British & French Envoys was held at the same time on the same floor as ours at the hotel. Tried to get Major Joffre to speak to us but was unsuccessful.

May 12.

McLaren, McMarrow & myself went down on the curb at Wall St., Statute of Liberty, and the Bowery. Eat some snails, and a wonderful oister cocktail. Embibed quite a bit of liker, which combined with the cocktail and snails made me sick. I missed dinner. The other two joined a party and went down to the Black Cat. About 12 o'clock I was awaikened by Burten and McLaren bringing McMarrow in. Had a pretty bad time with him, as he got into a fight with a waiter at The Black Cat and he was determined to go back and get him. They left me alone with Mack for a while and I was pretty badly scared that Mack would get
