my diery [diary] I slipped up and forgot to enter one of the most important functions of our stay in N.Y. Namely the dinner that Mr. & Mrs. Witman gave us. It was a wonderful dinner and absolutely up to style, with butlers, footmen, and all the rest of them. Had entertainment after dinner. I think we had the dinner on Wednesday night. ______________________________________________________

Arose at 8:00 A.M. after having less than four hours sleep. Had pictures of the units taken on the roof garden of the hotel. Went to the dock and had baggage inspected. Helped buy Herb Brown's cigarrette case, Dick's new pocket book.

Crafts trunk nearly got left. I stayed off untill [until] the last to try and get them to put it aboard. Got balled out for being late by the officers who said that they had to hold the boat. One baggage man looked at my steamer ticket. Seven officials went over my passport and O.K.'d it before I could get aboard. The Mongolia sailed just ahead of us. Left the pier at 3:30 P.M. among shouts and cheers. Spent pleasant afternoon passing out New York Harbor and past

Beautiful clear calm day. Just entering the danger zone. Two men in the crows nest, two men on the after deck, one on the forward deck, they and all the pashengers keeping a good look out for submarines. Had three thrills. The men in the crows nest reported three ships before we could see anything and everyone was wondering what they were looking at, and there were some funny and excited remarks, as all we could see was about five men
