PVT. Henry A. Eckhardt

This collection consists mostly of letters written by Private Henry A. Eckhardt to his girlfriend Marie Jochumsen while he was stationed in France. There are also a few letters written by Marie to Henry, and some to Marie or Henry from others. Henry A. Eckhardt (1890-1962) was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1917, and served with the 162nd Infantry in France as a machine gunner, later he was transferred to the 18th Infantry. Once discharged, Eckhardt and Marie married and lived the rest of their lives in San Francisco, where he worked as a fireman.

tell me what kind of a time you had. I only wished that I could have been with you across the bay Sunday. I miss you already. San Francisco April 13, 16

My Dear Sweet heart.

I received your letter Wednesday night when I got home from work. I'm glad to hear you are enjoying your self and only wish I was there to get in on some of the fun. I know I would enjoy myself and have a nice vacation at the same time have "More Fun". Be carefull not to fall in any of those creeks down there because then I would be so lonesome. I have missed you since you went away and feel like quiting my job to come down myself.

front rooms and am now burning the paint off the door. I went across the bay Saturday night and we got some logs. Walter Jim and myself.

Sunday morning Jim and I sawed up all the logs into blocking for the boat and in after noon we just loafed around. You should have been there and we would have had "more fun". Sunday night I got home early about 10 o'clock but I was tried and sore Monday. Monday & Tuesday we had some wind in Frisco it was some blow.

lot better than 4 a.m. I wish you had been there just the same and had some of the ice cream and cake. I wrote this during my noon hour down the store. I have no ink so you must excuse the pencil.

I have a crowd to takeout on the boat Sunday from Moore Watson Dry Goods Co. and that will keep me busy all day but just the same I always think of you and wish I was by your side. It makes me mad to think that I can not be with you and go hiking or wading in those creeks or spoon beneath the shady trees. "Gee we'd have more fun".
