PVT. Henry A. Eckhardt

This collection consists mostly of letters written by Private Henry A. Eckhardt to his girlfriend Marie Jochumsen while he was stationed in France. There are also a few letters written by Marie to Henry, and some to Marie or Henry from others. Henry A. Eckhardt (1890-1962) was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1917, and served with the 162nd Infantry in France as a machine gunner, later he was transferred to the 18th Infantry. Once discharged, Eckhardt and Marie married and lived the rest of their lives in San Francisco, where he worked as a fireman.

Los Gatos April. 17, 1916.

My Dearest Friend Henry:

Received your dear letter and was so pleased to here from you. I would have answered your letter sooner but have been out in the machine from early morning until late at night -- and when I would come home I would be all worn out and would to to bed. Sunday we started early in the morning and went to San Jose and called on some friends. From there we went to Gilroy

stopped there a while and then turned around went thought San Jose and on to Los Gatos. Monday we got up early and started off again. We went through Alma and all along the mountains until we got into Santa Cruz. We toured all around the Santa Cruz Mts. and around Santa Cruz. It was a rather tiresome journey but the scenery was very beautiful. We stopped up in the mountatins near some tall redwood trees, there was a waterfall

and a creek there so we ate our lunch there. We picked a lot of ferns and decorated our machine up and then started for home. I was so tired when I got home. Went to bed at 8.00 o'clock, and I am laying in bed writing this letter. I hope you had a nice time at your Grandmothers Birthday Party, and also enjoyed yourself Sunday with that crowd you was to take out. Well dear I haven't very much more news to tell you. But I think I will be home Friday
