This collection consists mostly of letters written by Private Henry A. Eckhardt to his girlfriend Marie Jochumsen while he was stationed in France. There are also a few letters written by Marie to Henry, and some to Marie or Henry from others. Henry A. Eckhardt (1890-1962) was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1917, and served with the 162nd Infantry in France as a machine gunner, later he was transferred to the 18th Infantry. Once discharged, Eckhardt and Marie married and lived the rest of their lives in San Francisco, where he worked as a fireman.

Dear Marie,

I suppose by the time you receive this letter you will know where I am. I hope you have received all of my letters. Because if you have not you will probaly think I have been lax in writing you. Well dear, I have not forgotten you and every day I look for a letter from you. I often wonder if you know where I am and if you have my new address. The last letter I received from you was on Jan 12 and mailed to Camp Mills. I hope you did not stop writing on account of not receiving any letters from me as I have been

traveling most of the time.

Well darling I certainly am a long distance from you and home. You can't imagine how I feel and some times I can't realize it. I go to bed at night and dream of you and home and in the morning I am disappointed to find it was all a dream. I am well and feeling fine, I hope you are the same.

We have very nice sleeping quarters here and the weather is very much the same as in dear old S.F. Every day is wash day here and you ought to see us all scrubing clothes. I tried to darn a couple pairs of socks the other day and had some time doing it. I had more fun pricking my fingers with the needle. I wish you were here

to do it for me. Oh you.

Yesterday I was feeling blue and lonely so I sat down and read all of your dear letters. They sure cheered me up some dear and I wondered if there was any more on the way for me. I hope there are many letters from you as I look forward for a letter at every mail. I received a letter from mother and one of the boys at the store. I got a letter from Karl Barion and Mrs. Ringholm and was pleased to hear from them. I got an insured package from home a couple of days ago. It contained a fruit cake, cookies, nuts, cigars, tobacco and a pair of socks from Mrs. Curtain
