Ramon Sweeney Letters

ReadAboutContentsHelp
Ramon “Ray” Sweeney (1896-1986), was born and raised in San Francisco. Due to his father’s untimely death just before the 1906 earthquake, Sweeney dropped out of school at the age of ten in order to work and help support his family. He enlisted in the Navy in 1917 and was initially stationed at Mare Island, California. He sailed for the Far East in 1918, and spent time in Honolulu, Shanghai, and the Philippines. He was discharged in 1919, and returned to San Francisco where he worked in the wholesale fruit and produce business.

Dear Ma, Have not written sooner as I have been waiting to see what they would do with the affidavits. Well we found out last night they said that the barracks we were in could only turn in fifteen a day. The first man that turned his in to get a number was number sixteen. That means the first fifteen were all friends of the bos'n mate of our company comander. I was number thirty two so that means I would come in on the third day. But in the morning it all changed around. Fellows got up about three p.m. and got in line. We could not do this because we were posted to go in line certain days. At seven o'clock they gave these fellows numbers from one to one hundred.

In the mean while our company commander had seen he done wrong and at nine oclock he said all those that have affidavits get in the line. But by that time they passed the word for all those who did not have a number to fall out so we were sting all around. To morrow the will take one hundred more numbers. If I have to stay up all night I am going to be one of the hundred.

It has been raining on and off up here fro the last couple of days and we all have to wear masks for the flu. Last week they buried one nearly every day. It is the Bunk staying up here over Saturday and Sunday. So I think this Saturday I will come home. There is nothing of interest to write about up here so will end Hoping you all are well.

With Love to all Ramon

Dear Ma,

Have been waiting a few days before I wrote to see if my name would appear on the list for a discharge but know such luck. They posted a list Sunday and there was some bunch on it. Some say there will be another list but I don't think so.

All the fellows who did not get discharged and the ones who had no affidavites, are so discusted with the place when they asked them if they wanted to change their rating to fireman, they done it. They will get shipped to New York some have been shipped all ready. I will not change because when they get you back there it is no telling how long they will keep you. Yesterday they got me on a swell job. (seaman guard).

My first watch was from 3:30 a.m. till 7:30 a.m. Nice walking with that gun on your back at that time, and that nice cool air.

We sleep in tents and the cool airs bother us again. I dont no how long this will last but as long as it does I won't be able to come home as we only get 24 hours liberty ever five days. I got my liberty to day and am over in Vallejo now. Some town all right.

Tell Dad I got the candy yesterday afternoon and it was swell, have not received the other mail from the Philippines. There is not much more to write about so I think I will end and look around the big town some more. Hoping everyone is well.

With love to all Ramon
