Frankfort Nov. 19th 1828

Dear Sir,

I have the pleasure of informing you, that the precise majority for the ticket pledged to vote for yourself as President and Mr. Calhoun as vice president, in this state, as ascertained by a full meeting of the Sheriffs on this day, to be 7934. Permit me to congratulate you, sir, on this signal proof, that the people of Kentucky cannot be induced by management, by art, by falsehood, nor even by her attachments, to be unjust to our country's defenders or give her sanction to a corrupt adminstration of the general government.

Great as in my gratification at this brilliant result on your account personally, I confess, that it is greater on account of our common country. The line of Secretary succession is broken, and it has now been proved by actual experiment, that the people cannot be controlled in the exercise of their elective franchise by the power and patronage of their own government.

I look foward to a new era under your adminisstration distinguished not only by reform in the administration of the government, but by such changes in its form as will cut off all inducements to men high in office to use the patronage of their stations for the purpose of purchasing popularity.

Our cannon is now announcing in a federal salute the triumph of principle in the state of Kentucky. Your friend & Obt Servt Amos Kendall
