Iudas had thre sones. Her. Onan and
Sela. Her weddid by ordinaunce of
his fader awo[m]man that hight Thamar. Her
died with oute childe. his broder Onan wed-
did the same wo[m]man. and he died with oute childe.
bothe breder wer wicked. wherfore god slue ham.
¶ The lawe was at that tyme if ther wer many
breder: if the eldest toke awife and died with oute
child by his wife: his next broder shuld wedde the same wo[m]man.
and if he died with oute childe the thrid broder shuld wedde hir.
and so furthe odir til the wo[m]man had child. And if she ony had:
it shuld be callid the first sones child. further. The thrid broder
Sela was not of age to take awife. Wherfore Judas sende Tha-
mar to his fader hous to abide there or Sela war of age. Whan
Sela came to age. Thamar had aspiance that Judas after his
wifis deth wold to sheryng of shepe in to a place callid tham-
nas. she cast away hir widewe clothis. wherfore Judas knew
hir not and lay by hir: and gate hir with child. ¶ After this:
Judas as a juge of the cuntri herd she was with child: and
wold haue brende hir. She brought aryng and astaf that
Judas toke hir whan he lai by hir and brought hir with
child. and so the wo[m]man was sauyd. and brought furthe
two childer ph/a\res and zaram.
